TRADITIONAL
PADDLE MATCH

Competitors:
One player or one team of two players on each side of the
table.
Setup:
1.)
Each player/team sets up one or two cups in an agreed upon
formation on their side of the table. This may involve one
cup in each corner or two cups somewhere near the middle.
There is room for flexibility here. The only requirement
is that each player/team's formations must be parallel (the
same). Each cup should also start out filled halfway with
beer. Examples are provided below.
2.)
Both players/teams must agree on the amount of points needed
to win the match before the match begins. The points total
is usually 11 or 21, but it is not necessary to use these
numbers.
Start
of the Match:
1.)
Volley for serve. The loser of the volley must serve first
to begin the match.
During
Play:
1.)
Volley begins with a player serving the ball to the opponent.
A serve consists of a player hitting the ball off his paddle,
the ball hitting his side of the table once, bouncing over
the net, and bouncing on the opponent's side of the table
once. A player may not score points on a serve.
2.)
If a player fails to serve properly, it is a fault and the
player must take a drink of beer before attempting another
serve.
3.)
After a legal serve is made, volley ensues until one player
either hits or sinks one of his opponent's cups.
4.)
If a player hits an opponent's cup, he receives one point
and must serve to begin the next volley. The opponent must
take a drink from that cup.
5.)
If a player sinks an opponent's cup, he receives three points
and must serve to begin the next volley. The opponent must
drink the remainder of the beer inside the cup that was
sunk and then refill it.
6.)
A player may not hit the ball until it has bounced at least
once. Violation of this rule results in either a warning
or a point for the other player or team. The referee will
make this judgment. Generally, you first receive a warning
and are then penalized afterward.
7.)
If a player hits a ball and it lands out of bounds or is
stopped dead by the net, he must serve to begin the next
volley.
8.)
If a player fails to return a legal shot for any reason,
he must serve to begin the next volley.
9.)
If a player's cup is knocked over, whether he does it himself
or is caused by an opponent's shot, that player automatically
loses the match.
10.)
Slamming or "spiking" the ball is not allowed.
A player who violates this rule ends the current volley
and must serve to begin the next one. Repeated offenses
can lead to forfeit of match at referee’s discretion.
11.)
Once a ball hits a cup, the volley is over. A ball may not
hit two cups at once or hit one cup and sink the other.
12.)
Players may refill their cups to the halfway point at any
time before a volley begins and are encouraged to do so
as often as possible.
End
of the Match:
1.)
A match ends when one player or team reaches the agreed
upon number of points required to win (generally 11 or 21).
However, a player or team must win by at least two points.
